Saul Berson is a highly respected jazz saxophonist and composer with more than 40 years of professional experience, based in his hometown of Vancouver. His career has taken him across Canada and around the world, performing throughout Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa. Known for his bright, lyrical sound and playful phrasing, Berson draws inspiration from the bebop stylings of Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley, while continuously exploring new sonic territories.
Berson’s musical versatility spans jazz standards, traditional jazz, bebop, post-bop, and avant-garde improvisation. His discography includes five studio albums, two of which have earned nominations for Canadian Music Awards. He has performed and recorded with notable international artists such as Jaki Byard, Steve Grossman, George Lewis, and Barry Guy.
A dynamic bandleader, Berson heads the long-standing Saul Berson Quartet as well as his latest ensemble, Asef, a genre-bending group that fuses jazz with Middle Eastern influences, creating a sound described as “culturally infused” and “engagingly intricate” (Cadence Magazine, The Province).
In addition to his own projects, Berson is a sought-after collaborator in the Vancouver music scene, performing regularly with ensembles such as the Ragtime Ramblers, Ard ‘n Saul, and the world music group Tzimmes.
